Description
Universally viewed as 'king of birds', the eagle represents strength, authority & valor. In ancient books of animal lore, the eagle is attributed the power of gazing directly into the sun without blinking & traversing the regions above to which humans had no access. Some cultures see the eagle as the 'messenger between heaven & earth'. In Christianity it appears as a symbol of John, the evangelist, & as an attribute of the prophet Elijah. Revered as a sacred symbol by Native Americans, the eagle represents patience, order and freedom, flying highest & closest to the Creator. It's vision, wisdom & courage are gifts we each possess. Eagle medicine is the power of the Great Spirit & represents a state of grace achieved through inner work. A 'slayer of snakes & dragons' the eagle symbolizes 'triumph over the darker forces'. Ancient Egyptians saw the eagle as a symbol of the noon sun, signifying the Great Spirit. Romans saw it as the carrier of Jupiter's thunderbolts & a sign of power. To the Greeks, the eagle was messenger to the God Zeus. It became the U.S.A. national emblem in 1782. From my original [36" x 60"] pastel.
